How to edit videos on your iPhone

Friday, 29 June, 2018

You don’t need a fancy camera and professional editing software to produce great video. You can film, edit and publish movies straight from your phone. If you want to turn your favorite family memories into a beautiful masterpiece, here how to edit videos on your iPhone:

Edit Videos on Your iPhone

Unfortunately, iPhones only come with one built-in video editing tool – trimming. Here is a quick tutorial to show you how you can shorten your videos:

If you want to make additional edits to your video, you’ll need to download a video editing app.

Manual Video Editing Apps

To download a video editing app on to your iPhone, go to the App Store, search for “video editor”, select the app you would like to download, and tap “Get”. (You may need to type in your Apple ID password to begin the download.)

Most video editing apps are free to download and use, but offer in-app purchases for additional features and functionality. Here is a quick list of features to look for when selecting an app:

  • Trim, split or combine clips
  • Add music, sound effects, text and titles
  • Adjust the display and add filters
  • Slow down or speed up the video or audio
  • Rotate, resize or reverse

If you’re not sure which app to choose, here are a few recommendations:

If you want complete control over your edits, manual video editing apps are the best choice.

Automatic Video Editing Apps

Editing videos does not have to be complicated.

If you don’t want to spend hours tinkering with your videos and learning how to use complicated apps, consider using an automatic video editor.

Instead of making the edits yourself, you simply choose the videos and photos that you want included in your movie, and the app does the editing for you.

Yours.co is one of the best automatic video editing apps on the market. Funded on Kickstarter in less than 24-hours, this app takes your favorite family memories and turns them into a professionally edited video (or “magic movie”) that you can watch on DVD or stream to your smart TV.

The most important thing you need to do on the last day of school

Tuesday, 5 June, 2018

Don’t blink.

Even though you’re exhausted from all the end of the school year festivities (and excited that you don’t have to pack another lunch until September), one day you’re going to wake up and your baby will graduate from high school, and it’ll feel like the past 18 years went by in about a minute.

Yeah, it goes that fast.

Before you secretly throw out the 1,324 art projects your kids brought home and start packing for your first trip, take a couple minutes to document this moment, because it’ll never be back again.

Interviewing your child on the last day of school is a great way remember the year. It’s a fun way to capture their cute, little personalities and all their favorite memories. It’ll be something they’ll enjoy and cherish for many years to come.

Here is a printable with some sample questions that you can use (click here to download):

Here are a couple examples of last day of Kindergarten interviews:

Once you’ve finished filming the interview on your phone, make sure to upload it to the Yours.co app, and we’ll turn it into a DVD for your family to enjoy for many years to come.

Graduation caps that’ll give you all the feels

Wednesday, 30 May, 2018

It doesn’t matter if you’re the one walking across the podium, or you’re the parent ugly crying in the audience, graduations evoke all sorts of emotions.

Over the next month, thousands of commencement speakers will try to inspire their audiences through crafty prose and lengthy stories (and probably throw in a few Dr. Seuss quotes along the way).

But sometimes the most inspirational messages are not told from the podium, but from the tops of the graduates’ heads. Their decorated caps represent their own, personal journeys. They share powerful words of determination and strength.

Of all the hats that will be thrown around this graduation season, here are just a few of our favorites:

Graduation day is one that you’ll never want to forget. We can take the photos and videos from your special day and turn it into a beautifully edited DVD. Check out Yours.co today to find out how.

6 tips for taking better videos of your kids

Thursday, 17 May, 2018

Say goodbye to poorly shot family home videos. Your memories deserve better. With just a few simple tricks, you can you take much better video of your kids:

1. Turn your camera

Film horizontally, instead of vertically. If you don’t, you’ll end up with black bars on the sides of the video when you watch it on a computer or TV.

If you film your videos horizontally, the image will fill the screen when you view it on another device. It’s a much better viewing experience.

2. Use good lighting

In the world of film and photography, lighting is everything. Outdoor lighting is better than indoor lighting. If you’re filming inside, open up the windows and try to get as much natural light as possible.

If you’re filming at night, or in a poorly lit room, grab lamps or other light sources from other rooms to increase visibility.

3. Invest in a tripod

You’ll never regret it.

Not only will it help steady your shots, it also gives you the opportunity to get in the video with your kids. You’ll have actual proof that you were there enjoying the moment.

3. Remember the rule of thirds

Interviewing your kid? Filming a school performance? Choir solo? Keep in mind the rule of thirds.

The concept is simple. Divide the image into nine equal parts and then center your child either along one of the lines or at an intersection. It makes for a much more visually appealing shot.

5. Know how to use your camera

Whether it’s an iPhone or a DSLR, make sure you know how to use your camera properly before you start shooting. It’s important to read the manual, so you can ensure you get the best footage possible.

6. Edit, burn, watch

Don’t keep your videos hidden on a phone or a computer forever. Edit them and then burn them onto a DVD, so your kids can enjoy watching their lives on the big screen. We can even do it for you. Check out Yours.co to learn more.

Your phone is dirtier than a toilet seat. Here’s how to clean it.

Wednesday, 25 April, 2018

It’s true.

According to Live Science, “cellphones carry 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats.” Gross, huh?

Emily Martin, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan, told Time.com, “Because people are always carrying their cell phones even in situations where they would normally wash their hands before doing anything, cell phones do tend to get pretty gross.”

Think about it: You probably carry your cell phone 24/7 – including bathroom breaks – and it never gets cleaned.

Yours.co Ad

Never fear. The germs on your phone aren’t going to make you deathly ill (unless you’re stealing phones from Ebola patients – yeah, that happened). However, it’s probably smart to sanitize your devices on a regular basis. Just in case.

So while you’re in between taking videos that you can turn into a DVD using Yours.co, here is the best way to sanitize your phone:

How to clean your phone

  1. Unplug your phone from all external power sources.
  2. Wipe it off using a soft, non-abrasive cloth (microfiber works great).
  3. Use special cleansing wipes or a small amount of diluted alcohol to clean off your phone. (The New York Times gives a great tutorial).
  4. Finish off by using compressed air to get rid of any additional dust or grime.

A few warnings

  • Your phone is an electronical device, and electronics don’t like water. (That’s one of the fastest ways to ruin your phone.) Keep liquids far, far away.
  • Avoid using abrasive cloths. You don’t want to scratch up your screen.
  • Stay away from spray cleaners, including aerosols.

For more information about cleaning your particular device, read “How to clean your Apple products” or  “How to clean and disinfect your Android smartphone.”

The best accessories for taking high-quality video with your phone

Most smartphones take pretty good video. But why settle for “pretty good” when you can have awesome? If you want to take high-quality video with your camera phone, check out these cool accessories:

Turn the videos on your phone into a DVD using Yours.co. Our free app is now available on Android and iPhone. Visit our website to learn more.

1. Ring Light

Stop waiting for good lighting – make good lighting. With a ring light, you can take video wherever and whenever you want. This LED attachment sits around your camera and shines directly at the subject, enhancing the video quality and visibility of the shot.

We recommend this ring light by Qiaya (a #1 best seller on Amazon). It has three levels of brightness, so you can get the best lighting for whatever situation you’re in. If you’re not completely satisfied, they’ll give you your money back. (But we’re pretty sure you’ll love it.)

2. Lavalier Microphone

What did you say? I can’t hear you.

With a lavalier microphone, you can ensure that everything your subject says is recorded loud and clear. They’re especially handy for interviews and live video. These microphones are so small, you can attach them to someone’s lapel, and they’re hardly noticeable.

We recommend this lavalier microphone from PoP Voice (it’s also Amazon’s top choice as well). This highly-rated accessory is noise cancelling, omnidirectional, and comes with an extra-long attachment cord.

3. Tripod

It’s hard to watch video that bounces all over the place. Keep your shots steady with a tripod. It’s also a great accessory to have if you want to get in the video, but you don’t want to use a selfie stick.

We recommend this portable tripod from Ubeesize. We like it because it easily transportable, and it includes a camera adapter, remote, and clip.

4. Camera Lens Kit

Similar to buying lenses for DSLR cameras, you can purchase additional camera lenses for smartphones. These tiny lenses make it easier to take enhanced and visually interesting videos.

We recommend AMIR’s camera lens kit. It includes super wide angle (expands the view), fisheye (180° degree), and micro (detailed close-ups) lenses.

What to do with the videos on your phone

Monday, 19 March, 2018

It’s time to get the videos off your phone and put them to good use. Here are a few of ways to backup phone videos and ensure that they live on forever:

Transfer videos from your phone to a DVD.

Backup phone videos to a DVD

Back in the good old days, families would gather around the television, pop in a VHS tape, and watch family home videos together.

Over time, you’d think the viewing experience would improve. But it hasn’t. In fact, it’s gotten worse. Because most people record videos on their phone, families have to squint at a tiny screen in order to enjoy their favorite family memories.

VIDEOS AND FAMILIES DESERVE BETTER THAN THAT.

Thanks to Yours.co, you can still watch your family home videos on the big screen. We take the videos on your phone and turn them into beautifully edited DVDs – complete with transitions and music. Click here to learn more.

Back your videos up.

Backup phone videos to a hard drive

Videos take up a lot of space. Clear up room on your phone by backing them up to a new location.

If you want access to your videos from any device, we recommend you use cloud storage. The most popular cloud drive services include AmazonDropBox and Box. Plans typically cost anywhere from $5 – $100 per year (depending on what you need).

If you don’t want to pay for a subscription, and you don’t need unlimited access, then we recommend backing up your files to an external hard drive. Although they are not the most reliable form of backup, external hard drives are great short-term solution for storing your videos.

Post your videos on social media.

Why not share your memories with your family and friends?

If you want to get the videos off your phone and in a place where everyone can easily enjoy them, social media is the perfect solution. Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo are all excellent sites for video uploading and sharing.

Before your post any videos of your children online, make sure you understand who is going to be able to view your videos. If you are worried about strangers viewing footage of your kids, make sure to set your videos to private.
