Interested in backing a Kickstarter campaign, but not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered. In this article, we’ll give you the ins and outs of how Kickstarter works, and how you can contribute to your favorite projects.

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform that helps creators raise money to bring their ideas to life. Since its launch, backers have pledged over $3.4 billion dollars towards various projects. It’s also a great place for people learn more to about exciting new products in technology, music, games, food, design, publishing, and film.

How does it work?

Before we dive in, here are a few terms that you need to know:

  • Project: An idea for a product, business, service, etc. that needs funding.
  • Creator: The company, individual, or team who comes up with the project and creates the Kickstarter campaign.
  • Funding Goal: The specific amount of money a creator needs in order to bring their project to life.
  • Pledge: A promise to contribute a certain amount of money toward the project.
  • Backer: An individual who pledges money.
  • Reward: An incentive creators offer to backers for pledging money toward their project.

How do I back a project?

Interested in funding a project? Becoming a backer is easy. Here is how you can contribute to a creator’s project:

Step 1: Create an Account

You can create an account by clicking here. Make sure to use a valid email address and a password with at least six characters.

Step 2: Save Payment Method (Optional)

Once your account is created, you can access your account information by using the dropdown menu in the top right-hand corner.


Select “Payment methods” to insert your credit card information. (Don’t worry – it’s secure.)

Step 3: Make a Pledge

Go to the project page that you would like to help fund and click on the button that says “Back this project.”

Select the amount you would like to pledge. You can choose an existing option (rewards included), or you can make a pledge for any amount (reward not included).

Select your payment method and submit.

Remember: You will not be charged unless the project is fully funded. If the creator doesn’t reach their goal, then no money is collected.

Here’s why cameras make you look 10 pounds heavier

If you’ve ever complained about looking fat in pictures, you’ve probably been comforted by the age-old claim: “The camera adds 10 pounds.”

Turns out, it’s not a myth designed to help people feel better about themselves. Cameras make their subjects look a few pounds heavier. Here’s why:

Lens Structure

According to Gizmodo, wide angle lenses “create a sort of fisheye effect, which can bloat subjects in the middle, and stretch those on the outside.” Depending on the type of lens the photographer uses, it’ll distort the picture in ways that are less flattering.

Here’s an excellent example:


Jon Cornicello, a photography expert, explains that the additional weight could also be the byproduct of the photographer’s distance: “When it comes to perspective in photography, the closer you are to your subject, the more narrow their face will appear…we all seem to look heavier to ourselves in photographs that are taken from greater distances.”

Most people only see themselves when they look in the mirror – a very short distance – so it makes sense that when they see themselves from a greater distance, it isn’t what they expect.


Photography blogger, Alea Lovely, said it best: “Angles can be your best friend or worst enemy.” There’s a reason why most selfies are taken from above. It’s an angle flatters everyone.

In addition to the camera angle, how you position yourself is also key to looking slimmer in pictures. Stick out your chin, turn your body, and position your arms away from your body.
